Darker Themes And ‘Big Things To Come’ In Third Series

HOW DID WORKING ON THE SECOND SERIES OF MERLIN COMPARE TO THE FIRST RUN?
When we first started on the series, filming was new to me. So whenever you start on a second series you’re familiar with the technical things for a start. Also there’s the character – you know how to approach a scene, you know how to work with other actors. You also become a bit more confident with the guest stars, even though with the guest stars we get coming in, you sort of pinch yourself sometimes.

WHO DID YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOY WORKING WITH?

Charles Dance was brilliant, he played the Witchfinder in one of the episodes and he just had a lot of fun with it – and was genuinely quite intimidating. Mackenzie Crook (pictured below) was great in the first episode. I had a lot of fun with him because he had a lot of fun with the role. The guest star in the final episode, John Lynch, was probably my favourite because I got to work with him quite a lot.

DO YOU OFTEN WATCH MERLIN TO EXAMINE YOUR PERFORMANCE?
With this kind of show it’s kind of hard to actually study your performance. I think you shouldn’t really try to do that, because so much stuff is done in post-production with Merlin, in terms of special effects and music. When you watch it back you’re often seeing yourself in a scene with a monster or creature that obviously wasn’t there when you were doing it.

Merlin Series 3

Merlin will return to BBC One next year for a third series, it has been announced.

The fantasy series, which stars Colin Morgan as a young mythical wizard, has been a Saturday night ratings success since its debut in 2008.

BBC controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson said of the show: “With its mix of magic, adventure and humour, Merlin is perfect Saturday evening family television, and we are thrilled that Shine Television will be creating a new series for BBC One.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures our popular young wizard, and his friends in Camelot, will go on in series three.”

The second series of Merlin launched earlier this year to a healthy 5.08 million viewers for BBC One and since averaged 5.15 million over its 10-episode run.
